To Aloys von Orelli
Dear Colleague, 7 February 1950
I have read through your MS with interest and found it correct.
I only feel somewhat doubtful when you equate “affectivity" with feeling.
Affectivity is emotionality and I would like to distinguish it strictly from feeling, which, if differentiated, is a rational (value) function, whereas affects always remain spontaneous products of nature.
Only in its undeveloped, primitive state is feeling contaminated with emotions, this being the distinguishing mark of undifferentiated feeling.
“Morbus Schlemihl"is an admirable invention!
Page 9· The formulation that individuation takes place even without marriage, by way of introspection and meditation, is a bit too positive.
To avoid misunderstandings, one would immediately have to add that a responsible relationship of whatever kind is essential, otherwise that particular side of the individual remains undeveloped.
Page 10. It is questionable whether the union of animus and anima can be described as a unio mystica.
The only certain thing is that the hierosgamos is a mythological parallel.
The unio mystica is more a dissolution of the ego in the divine Ground-a very different experience.
As for your question about the primacy of the intellect or of feeling, I would point out that I have answered it in my essay “Woman in Europe" by saying that feminine psychology is generally characterized by the principle of Eros and masculine psychology by the principle of Logos.
This point is discussed at some length.
I should be very glad to receive you for a talk, only I can't do it at once because I am going on
holiday next week.
Afterwards I could see you on Tuesday, 21 February, at 8 p.m. if this time suits you.
Meanwhile with collegial regards,
Yours sincerely,
