To Karl Kerenyi
Dear Professor Kerenyi, 20 August 1945
Your study on the Heros Iatros,1 filled to the brim and overflowing with meaning, has given me particular joy, for which-albeit with unforgiveable tardiness-I thank you most heartily.
I won't mention the numerous reasons for procrastination, but above all I had to read the whole book first.
I am always profoundly impressed by the riches of Greek mythology, which have hitherto been presented so paltrily.
You touch the fragments with the magic wand of your intuition, and behold! they fly together into recognizable figures.
The motif you are dealing with is excitingly rich in associations and full of pregnant allusions.
Concerning Machaon there is in alchemy an ancient author (most alchemists were physicians) by the name of Elbo Interfector.
The stag also appears as a cognomen of Mercurius or as Actaeon and the wounding plays a great and mysterious role, as indicated in the saying: bellida pax, vulnus dulce, suave malum.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Ascona again.
With cordial thanks,
Ever sincerely yours,
C.G. Jung ~Letters Vol. I, Page 376.
