To Heinrich Zimmer
My dear Zimmer, 26 August 1941
Heartiest thanks for your two manuscripts, "The Involuntary Creation" and "The Celtic Romance of the Soul."
I shall soon enjoy reading them, which I can do now as I am on holiday.
We often think of you and did so quite particularly at the last Eranos meeting, where a Hungarian Hellenist and mythologist, Kerenyi, did his best to take your place for us, though it didn't quite come off because there is, after all, only one Zimmer who, we concluded, is inimitable.
We simply missed you!
Altogether, you can hardly imagine the moribundness of this European world.
Particularly here in Switzerland we have the feeling that we can only live vertically.
Thank God for small mercies!
But living horizontally is nice too, though completely blighted because after a few kilometers we hit the frontier and on top of that we no longer have a car.
When we go on holiday my wife and I push a two-wheeled cart ahead of us with the luggage, which is not so sad but uncommonly amusing.
As you may have heard, I have been very busy of late with Catholic matters.
This time I have given three lectures on the Mass.
I haven't published anything for a long time, otherwise I would have sent it to you.
My wife sends best greetings to you and your wife, and so do I.
Yours ever,
