Having read OZ' Man Adam and his Chillun I was quite able to appreciate the particular beauty of the play and of your share in it.

I wish we could see such a thing over here.

But, alas, it is not even to be seen in England.

The censors there must be completely possessed by the devil.

No wonder, it is a piece of true religion.

1 J. designed the set for Marc Connelly's play The Green Pastures. The play was based on Roark Bradford's stories of Negro life in the Deep South, Ol' Man Adam an' his Chillun ( 1928). Connelly's play opened in New York in Feb. 1930 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 1929/30.

2 The Lord Chamberlain, the Earl of Cromer, refused a license for a London production. Although no reason was given, the general impression was that exception was taken to the impersonation of God by a Negro.
