The unity of these two, life and consciousness, is the Tao, whose symbol would be the central white light (compare the Bardo Thodol, the Tibetan Book of the Dead).
This light dwells in the ‘square inch’, or in the ‘face’, that is, between the eyes.
It is the image of the creative point, a point having intensity without extension, thought of as connected with the space of the ‘square inch’, the symbol for that which has extension.
The two together make the Tao. Human nature [hsing] and consciousness [hui] are expressed in light symbolism, and are therefore intensity, while life [ming] would coincide with extensity. ~Carl Jung, Commentary to The Secret of the Golden Flower.
