Carl Jung: ...individuation is an opus contra naturam...




Without entering into other details of the text, I would like to draw attention to one more point: the building of the rampart against Gog and Magog (also known as Yajuj and Majuj).

This motif is a repetition of Khidr's last deed in the previous episode, the rebuilding of the town wall.

But this time the wall is to be a strong defence against Gog and Magog.

The passage may possibly refer to Revelation 20:ηί. (AV):

And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city.

Here Dhulqarnein takes over the role of Khidr and builds an unscalable rampart for the people living "between Two Mountains."

This is obviously the same place in the middle which is to be protected against Gog and Magog, the featureless, hostile masses.

Psychologically, it is again a question of the self, enthroned in the place of the middle, and referred to in Revelation as the beloved city (Jerusalem, the centre of the earth).

The self is the hero, threatened already at birth by envious collective forces; the jewel that is coveted by all and arouses jealous strife; and finally the god who is dismembered by the old, evil power of darkness.

In its psychological meaning, individuation is an opus contra naturam, which creates a horror vacui in the collective layer and is only too likely to collapse under the impact of the collective forces of the psyche.

The mystery legend of the two helpful friends promises protection to him who has found the jewel on his quest.

But there will come a time when, in accordance with Allah's providence, even the iron rampart will fall to pieces, namely, on the day when the world comes to an end, or psychologically speaking, when individual consciousness is extinguished in the waters of darkness, that is to say when a subjective end of the world is experienced.

By this is meant the moment when consciousness sinks back into the darkness from which it originally emerged, like Khidr's island: the moment of death. ~Carl Jung, CW 9i, Pages 146-147

Blake and Individuation

The process of individuation was developed by Carl Jung to make the unconscious known to the conscious mind in order to reveal the whole person. It has been called a process of self-actualization.

Claire Dunne, who wrote Carl Jung, Wounded Healer of the Soul, explains individuation thus:

“Individuation is the experience of a natural law, an inner self-regulating process by which man becomes a whole human being acknowledging and living the total range of himself. In the process the ego is ultimately faced with something larger than itself, a force that it yields to and serves. The human being thus recognizes itself as both material and spiritual, conscious and unconscious.” (Page 61)

She quotes Jung in this statement on Page 62:

“Individuation does not only mean that man has become truly human as distinct from animal, but that he is to become partially divine as well. That means practically that he becomes adult, responsible for his existence, knowing that he does not only depend on God but that God also depends on man.” (L2, P316, letter to Elined Kotschnig)

Jung’s process of individuation involves the willingness to recognize components of the unconscious, to look at how they they relate to the conscious mind and integrate then into a whole which is larger than the ego’s domain. Blake describes the recognition of multiple internal forces which must be acknowledged and assimilated into a functioning whole. Both men are preoccupied with the process of taking apart the buried influences which direct and control the outer man and reassembling them consciously into a true man in touch with the Totality beyond the individual.

The dividing, subduing, and restoring is repeated in Blake uncountable times; here’s one example:

It was known, and stated, very early that the man Jesus, the son of Mary, was the principium individuationis.

Thus Basilides is reported by Hippolytus as saying:

''Now Jesus became the first sacrifice in the discrimination of the natures, and the Passion came to pass for no other reason than the discrimination of composite things.

For in this manner, he says, the sonship that had been left behind in a formless state [anopsia] . . , needed separating into its components, in the same way that Jesus was separated."

According to the rather complicated teachings of Basilides, the "non-existent" God begot a threefold sonship.

The first "son," whose nature was the finest and most subtle, remained up above with the Father.

The second son, having a grosser (iraxv^pio-Tepa) nature, descended a bit lower, but received "some such wins: as that with which Plato . . . equips the soul in his Phaedrus."

The third son, as his nature needed purifying, fell deep est into "formlessness."

This third "sonship" is obviously the grossest and heaviest because of its impurity.

In these three emanations or manifestations of the non-existent God it is not hard to see the trichotomy of spirit, soul, and body.

Spirit is the finest and highest; soul, as the ligamentum spiritus et corporis, is grosser than spirit, but has "the wings of an eagle," so that it may lift its heaviness up to the higher regions.

Both are of a "subtle" nature and dwell, like the ether and the eagle, in or near the region of light, whereas the body, being heavy, dark, and impure, is deprived of the light but nevertheless contains the divine seed of the third sonship, though still unconscious and formless.

This seed is as it were awakened by Jesus, purified and made capable of ascension by virtue of the fact that the opposites were separated in Jesus through the Passion (i.e., through his division into four).

Jesus is thus the prototype for the awakening of the third sonship slumbering in the darkness of humanity.

He is the "spiritual inner man."

He is also a complete trichotomy in himself, for Jesus the son of Mary represents the incarnate man, but his immediate predecessor is the second Christ, the son of the highest archon of the hebdomad, and his first prefiguration is Christ the son of the highest archon of the ogdoad, the demiurge Yahweh.

This trichotomy of Anthropos figures corresponds exactly to the three sonships of the non-existing God and to the division of human nature into three parts.

We have therefore three trichotomies:


First sonship Christ of the Ogdoad Spirit

Second sonship Christ of the Hebdomad Soul

Carl Jung on “Individuation.” - Anthology

The individual is obliged by the collective demands to purchase his individuation at the cost of an equivalent work for the benefit of society. ~Carl Jung, The Symbolic Life, Page 452.

Individuation and collectivity are a pair of opposites, two divergent destinies. They are related to one another by guilt. ~Carl Jung, The Symbolic Life, Page 452.

In the last analysis every life is the realization of a whole, that is, of a self, for which reason this realization can also be called "individuation." ~Carl Jung, Psychology and Alchemy, Page 222.

You can never come to your self by building a meditation hut on top of Mount Everest; you will only be visited by your own ghosts and that is not individuation: you are all alone with yourself and the self doesn't exist. ~Carl Jung, Zarathustra Seminar, Page 805.

Individuation is only possible with people, through people. You must realize that you are a link in a chain, that you are not an electron suspended somewhere in space or aimlessly drifting through the cosmos. ~Carl Jung, Zarathustra Seminar, Page 103.

Where one is identified with the collective unconscious, there is no recognition of the things which come from the unconscious, they cannot be distinguished from those of the self. Such a condition is a possession by the anima or animus. Possession by the animus or anima creates a certain psychological hermaphroditism. The principle of individuation demands a dissociation or differentiation of the male and the female in ourselves. Before [individuation] can be taken as a goal, the educational aim of adaptation to the necessary minimum of collective norms must first be attained. The difference between the "natural" individuation process, which runs its course unconsciously, and the one that is consciously realized is tremendous. In the first case, consciousness nowhere intervenes; the end remains as dark as the beginning. In the second case, so much darkness comes to light that the personality is permeated with light and consciousness necessarily gains in scope and insight. The encounter between conscious and unconscious has to ensure that the light that shines in the darkness is not only comprehended by the darkness, but comprehends it (from "Answer to Job" in CW 11, par. 756).

Insofar as this process [of individuation], as a rule, runs its course unconsciously as it has from time immemorial, it means no more than that the acorn becomes an oak, the calf a cow, and the child an adult.
